The start of a new year is all about renewing fitness goals, creating fitness goals, crowding the gym to the point of annoying those who go regularly, etc. A lot of people make resolutions around fitness and stuff. I don’t make resolutions. I’m not sure why, just never thought it was conducive since I am mostly active in some way year round. However, I am giving my fitness routine a bit of a facelift.
I play soccer twice a week, and that’s not going to change any time soon. I absolutely love the sport, the friendships it is bringing me, and the break from the usual cardio-lift-repeat routine I did for so many years. In light of that, I am cancelling my gym membership for the time being. I haven’t set foot in a gym since May (I think) of last year, and honestly it just doesn’t appeal to me to go. Anything I did there, I can easily do either outside, or at home, and with soccer I don’t see a point in continuing spending money on something I have not utilized in more than six months.
I’ve actually signed up for the Spartan Race in July and through that get a daily WOD email. Some are on crack (seriously, I am not trying to place in this race), but there is a common theme to all of them: you mostly just need your own body weight to do the exercises. So, between those emails and soccer, and getting into outdoor running again, I think I am covered for now and will happily save the few bucks a month I am getting from cancelling with PF. If I ever do rejoin a gym, it will likely be my work gym since that is only 10 bucks more than PF, far more convenient, and has actual classes like pilates and yoga. We’ll see how it goes. :)
Sounds like a great plan to me! I wish I was athletic enough to do a sport that counted as cardio. I’m currently loving my gym, but I’m a class nut. If I didn’t have them, I’d never go.
Good luck with the changes! I’m trying to be a little less predictable in my routines and throwing more weights into the mix. THis is probably the 100th time I’ve done it… but at least if I keep it up for a few weeks, it seems like a win.
i’m so glad to hear that soccer is bringing you such joy! since i completed the barre challenge, i don’t have a membership anywhere—i torn my hammy a little 3 wks ago and it hurts to run or jump etc. so. i basically am walking briskly 2-3x a week and that’s it! maybe subbing some modified yoga on one of those times…basically the laziest start of the new year possible ha. oh injuries :/
